The Road to Being Published

Another Wednesday, another update. It seems like these just keep getting shorter and shorter.

I really haven’t done all the much this week. Hopefully, next week I’ll have more to report.

Days of the Kill is still on hold for a while. I’m currently saving up money for an editor, and only getting paid every other week at a part-time job, it’s slow-going. I was going to contact the editor at the beginning of May, but since I have less money now than I did at the beginning of this month, that’s not going to happen. Hopefully my fundraising idea will help with that money. I’m also still sending out previews to Days of the Kill to anyone who wants one… Let me know if you’re interested!

The Path to Biological is still going slow. I haven’t really had a lot of time to work on it lately. Seems like life keeps getting in the way. Maybe in a couple weeks I’ll actually be able to work on it for a while.

The Child of Fault is still on hold as well. I decided to take off the rest of April to get my thoughts back together on it, and I’m glad I did. I return to it in just two days! This time, I’m making sure I write every single day, no matter what.

Like I said, hopefully next week I’ll have a better report, especially since The Child of Fault will be underway again. Until next week….stay tuned!

Money Struggles

Being a writer can be absolutely crippling to your bank account. As someone who is currently struggling to get enough money to get an editor, I would know. It’s more than horrific to think about.

I guess all authors struggle before they get their first book out. Heck, most authors probably struggle even after they get their first book out. Unless, you know, you’re JK Rowling or someone with her kind of money.

I recently got in contact with an editor that I think could do a really good job with my manuscript and undo all the damage that the first editor seems to have done. I know, I said the first editor did a really good job. Well, after looking at the sample edit that the second editor did, I’m afraid I have to take that back, as much as I didn’t want to.

I look at the money that I spent on the first editor. It’s not a bad deal. I spent just over $500 on her services. Not bad when you think about what most editors cost, right? Well, I guess you get what you pay for, which in this case, I’m afraid wasn’t much.

I think what pains me most is the fact that I had no reason to not trust this editor. My publicist actually got me in touch with her, and said that she could do a really good job. As much as I love what my publicist is doing, I had a really good feeling about her.

While talking about this, I guess what could have happened was, she really did do an amazing job with it, but the second editor has a completely different view. I happen to trust the second editor… She’s getting to be fairly well-known.

I’ve gotten off-track. Anyway. The point is, being an unpublished writer can be hard, and extremely frustrating when you need services, but you don’t have the funds for it. I think paying the editor will be the hardest part. When that’s over with, I can move on to the cover art while I’m working on the edits.

I guess that’s about it for this week. I may or may not be able to post next Monday. I’ll be getting back in town on Sunday, so I should be able to, but we will see. So until then…stay tuned!

The Road to Being Published

Another Wednesday has come, so it’s time for another update. Have I said how much I love these recently? 🙂

I’m pretty excited with how this week has gone. It’s had it’s ups and downs, but what week doesn’t? I do believe I’m getting closer and closer to feeling like an actual author.

Days of the Kill is going places. I really hope not down the drain, because that would be bad. I got in contact with the second editor, and her sample edit is amazing. I love her work. The bad thing is…she charges a lot more than the other editor! I don’t know how I’m supposed to be able to afford that… She said she doesn’t usually do payment plans, but she’s willing to work with me, which I’m thankful for. As a college student, I pretty much have no money, which means I need people to be willing to work with me.

The Path to Biological is going really slowly still. I haven’t had a Saturday that was free to just work on it! Or any day, really, for that matter. Curse you, life! Curse you. Anyway… I’m not even 100 pages into the third draft yet. Hopefully, that will change soon. I may be doing two chapters at once, but all the chapters are short, and I need the time to work on more than just two a day!

The Child of Fault is going well. It was slower than I had hoped, but word count wise, I’m actually right on track to finishing it. I’m so excited about that! I’m so ready to see how the first draft ends up. Now, if only this loop hadn’t been thrown in… Gosh darn it.

I guess that’s about it for this week. I’m really excited about how well it’s gone. We’ll see how much farther I can get by next week. Until then…stay tuned!

The Road to Being Published

Another Wednesday, another time to look at how far I’ve come.

I’m really excited with how well this week has gone. I got Days of the Kill back from the editor (yay!), and I finished looking through what she did with it. I have to say, she’s amazing. She did a great job with it. Now, she just wants me to get one more editor… I think I know just the one, too. I just have to get my bank account prepared…yikes!

The Path to Biological is going slowly. I’m still working on the third draft, though I do plan to be able to work on it for about an hour on Saturday, at the very latest. Maybe today, too! Maybe. I hope. I’ll get to the fourth draft eventually. After draft four comes beta readers. That won’t be for a little while, at least.

I’ve got to say, The Child of Fault has come along really well. I’m getting closer and closer to the end of it! I have almost 35,000 words written on it. I’m so excited! I’m definitely looking forward to getting the first draft done. I can already tell it needs A LOT of work. But, I suppose that’s what first drafts are for, right? 🙂

I’m so excited about how this week has gone. I’m looking forward to what next week brings!

I guess that’s it for this week. Next week is another update. Until then… Stay tuned!

Budget, Budget, Budget!

I’m pretty much broke. Like, flat broke. Well, I have a couple hundred in the bank (at least), but when I need to make payments to an editor…well, you get the picture.

I think all writers struggle with that. At least at first. Then some of us hit it big and never have to worry about money again. Others…well, not so much. Personally, I’m hoping to make it big, but we’ll see how that goes. Don’t we all? I do always say, “When I’m rich and famous…” Never hurts to think positive. 😉

So, what do you do when you’re on a budget? I’m just limiting the amount of time I spend on Amazon (Amazon addict, especially when it’s almost my youngest niece’s second birthday…look out, bank account!!!) and living paycheck to paycheck. Life of a writer, am I right?

I’m personally a big fan of Thumbtack right now. Over the next 24 hours, I’ll be getting emails from editors so I can get an idea of who would be a good fit for me and who I can afford. Yes, I realize there’s such things as payments, but even those have their limits.

Now, for those of you who have been reading my posts for any length of time might be questioning: didn’t I have an editor already?

Quite simply: yes. I did. I still do for future projects.

While she did an amazing job on my manuscript, she wanted me to get one more editor. Mostly, she wanted me to get a content editor, but I can’t do that! My manuscript defies all normal murder mysteries… But, I will get another editor.

Now, I did have one in mind, but apparently, that one isn’t much good…and is unprofessional. Beware of those, writers. I’m so glad I found that post about her.

Well, I guess that’s about it for this week. Wednesday, we’ll look to see how far along I’ve come again. Until then…stay tuned!

The Road to Being Published

Another Wednesday, another update. I always look forward to these. 🙂

I’ve done pretty well with writing this week, I have to say. I’m not quite as far as I would like to be, but I’ve still done pretty well for barely having any of the weekend to write.

Days of the Kill is still with the editor. I thought I would be working on it by now, but I’m not. I don’t mind, though. She’s taking the time she needs, and I totally respect that. I’m glad she is. She’s still a fairly new copy-editor, but the work I’ve seen so far is absolutely amazing.

Something weird happened with The Path to Biological. It wouldn’t take me to the place that I stopped at, so I had to start over with the third draft. It was disappointing, but I’ll be alright. Maybe I’ll still reach my deadline anyway. Well, my self-imposed deadline. Really, it’s okay. I’ll get through some of that faster this time, and I have Saturday dedicated to writing, anyway. 🙂

I’ve done really well with The Child of Fault this week. I’m getting really close to having 30,000 words written. I found this spreadsheet on my Writing Accountability Group on Facebook, so now I’m forced to write at least that many words a day. But, I’m not complaining. It makes sure I write so I meet my deadline. I’m not going to complain about that!

I have now reached five videos for my vlog. I’ll be doing my sixth today. I got my first couple comments last night. They were mean ones, like, “Go kill yourself,” and “You’re a stupid bitch.” I hadn’t really thought about how I would react to the horrible comments that can happen, but I decided you know what? These people don’t even know me. They don’t know what I’m really like. Yes, I’m extremely awkward and maybe not the most comfortable in front of a camera, but I decided to do a vlog so I can maybe expand my audience. I’m not letting a few mean comments get in my way. And hey, even though they didn’t like it, they still took time to watch. And besides, it’s called The Awkward Writer for a reason. 🙂

Well, I guess that’s about it for this week. Hopefully I’ll have Days of the Kill back by next week. Until then…stay tuned!

The Road to Being Published

Another Wednesday, another update. I love these!

I’m really excited about how the week has gone. I hit a major milestone. Or at least, I think it’s a milestone. Maybe not for more experienced authors, but for me, it is. Yay. 🙂

Days of the Kill is going really well! It’s still with the editor, but I got a snippet back the other day, and I’m so excited about that! The manuscript is already sounding so much better than it was. She figured out a ton of sentences that were bothering me. I’m so happy about that.

The Path to Biological is going a little slowly, but it’s going along. I’m hoping I’ll be able to pick it up more on Saturday, but my four-year-old niece will be visiting, so…we’ll see. It’s on the third draft, though, so hopefully I’ll see a lot of improvement! It’s a major rewrite draft, though, so I’ll still probably have to write a fourth draft before beta readers are brought into the picture.

The Child of Fault is going slowly again, though I do have just under 25,000 words down. I did almost 5,000 words this week! That’s not a lot, but hey, I’m glad I was able to get that much done. A lot of time I don’t. We’ll see how far I can get by next week.

I guess that’s about all this week. I’m looking forward to seeing how far I get next week. By next week, I should be working more on Days of the Kill! Until then…stay tuned!

The Road to Being Published

Another Wednesday, another time to look at how far along I am in my journey of being published.

I have to say, it doesn’t really seem like I’ve come very far, but I really feel like I’ve done a lot. so, I’m excited about it.

Days of the Kill is officially off with the editor! I sent it to her last Wednesday evening. I’m so excited to see how far I’ve come with that. It was just last May when I started the first draft for that… Less than a year later, it’s off with the editor. I can’t believe it.

I’m currently taking a break on The Path to Biological. I start up with the third draft tomorrow. Well…after work, anyway. I’m so excited to get started on the third draft. Not so much that one of the characters needs a major rewrite, but hey, if I can get that, I’m not too worried about it. So, we’ll see how that goes.

The Child of Fault has come a long way! I finally hit 20,000 and almost to 21,000. How cool is that? It’s amazing how much you can get done in one week if you’re working on just one manuscript. But, I made the decision to work on three at once, so I’m excited for the times that I get to work on just one. The Child of Fault was being sadly neglected. I’m glad to have time to work on it.

Lastly, I can’t believe how many people have liked my Facebook author page! I’m not even published yet and have over two thousand likes! Thank you to everyone who has liked my page.

I guess that’s about it this week. Hopefully I’ll have Days of the Kill back from the editor next week. She said I would have it back within fourteen days!

Until next week…stay tuned!

The Road to Being Published

Another Wednesday, another day to look at how far along I’ve come.

I have to say, I’m really excited with how I’ve done this week. Maybe it’s because I reached a couple major milestones. Well, it’s major for me, anyway. I know it’s part of the normal writing process, but I’m not even published yet. Let me live in my fantasy world.

I’m so excited about Days of the Kill! I have a deadline to get that to the editor TODAY. Well, a self-imposed deadline, but still a deadline. I’m so excited about that! I may have procrastinated a little, but I love that I’m getting really close. I have a couple more hours worth of work before I can send it off! I’m so excited. If only my bank account was as excited as I was. Sigh.

The Path to Biological is going along really well. I just finished editing the second draft last night! I can’t believe it. I have a long way to go still, but that’s what other drafts are for. I’m not worried. My beta readers and editor will get what I missed for me. Even though I have a long way to go before I get there.

The Child of Fault is going along really slowly. It seems like I can never get a solid hour to work on it. It’s frustrating. I have just over 13,000 words. The good news is, since I’m taking a week off from The Path to Biological, and Days of the Kill is about to be with the editor for a couple weeks, The Child of Fault will be the only manuscript I’m working on for a few days. I’m so excited!

I can’t wait to see how far I can go. I have to say, I’m really glad I have a publicist, because marketing is my weakness. She’s already trying to find reviewers for my book! Not to mention she set me up with my editor. That’s awesome.

Finally, I would like to say that my vlog should be returning this week! And hopefully, it will be going for a while. Though I have to say I don’t know about next week. Ugh, I started it at the worst time. I have fun doing it, though.

Well, I guess that’s about it for this week. Next week, Days of the Kill should be with the editor. Until then…stay tuned!

The Road to Being Published

Another Wednesday, another update to see how far I’ve come. Oh, joy.

No, really, I like doing this. It’s just been a long day, you know? Anyway, enough about that. Time to talk writing. Whoo-hoo!

Okay, so I got beta reader feedback from, well, the beta readers. Well, only two gave me feedback, and one was a while back. I looked over it, though, and yay! It’s actually helpful. Both of them are. Now, I just need to get back at them for every single bad thing they said. Wait, what? I totally meant that I need to take their suggestions seriously and edit Days of the Kill. Yeah, that’s totally what I mean. No evil planning here. Nope. None.

In all seriousness, I’ve edited the first chapter of Days of the Kill based on their feedback. Actually, it helped. The first chapter is a lot better, and the hate at the beginning isn’t anywhere near as strong. I like that. It was way too strong before.

The Path to Biological is coming along well. I’m on page… 60 or 70-something. I’ve actually come a long way. It’s better than I thought it would be. Maybe it was that hour I took one night… Then I got sleepy and couldn’t work the other hour on The Child of Fault. I went to bed instead.

The Child of Fault is coming along extremely slowly. I just…ugh. I always run out of time. I have almost 13,000 words. I was hoping to be at 20,000 a long time ago. Maybe I’ll be able to play catch up on Saturday. I hope to be able to dedicate all of Saturday to writing. At least every other Saturday, because, you know, I started hanging around this guy and plan to the other Saturdays… It’s not a date, so get that out of your heads right now.

Wait, what were we talking about again? Oh, yeah, writing.

I’m excited to announce that I now have a publicist! That’s right, I was noticed by a publicist. She came to my Facebook page and contacted me. And she rocks. Seriously.

She set me up with an editor. How cool is that? I actually have an editor now. Okay, so I know it’s normal to have an editor, but this is a first for me. So allow me to believe that it’s amazing.

Well, I guess that’s all for this week. I know I rambled on a lot. Sorry about that, guys! Next Wednesday will be another update. Until then…stay tuned!
